2004 Chevy Silverado Review
The Silverado is a dream working truck, it is made to outlast and outrun other
trucks in its category. This tough truck is offered in two trims, the base and
the LS, and comes in either two-wheel or four-wheel configurations. The standard
engine with the 1500 regular cabs is a 4.3-liter Vortec V6 with 200 horsepower
at 4600 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm.
There are two transmission choices, the standard 5-speed manual and the optional
4-speed automatic. There are two optional engines available as well: a 4.8-liter
Vortec V8 with 285 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm
and a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 with 295 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque
at 4000 rpm. The latter is offered only with the 4-speed automatic transmission.
Safety features on all models comprise of dual-level front air bags designed to
give a suitable amount of inflation based on the severity of the collision.
A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front
air bag under certain circumstances to shield children. Active safety features
consist of four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS) on all models. Auto4WD improves
traction and stability of four-wheel-drive models on slippery roads.
Driving the Silverado is quite an experience, the stiff frames reduce noise and
vibration of the truck making the ride firmer and quieter. The rigid chassis permits
the suspension to soak up and handle bumps and ruts. A magnesium beam behind the
instrument panel and a lateral steel beam between the magnesium beam and the right
side of the dash stiffen the cab. This extra stiffening is intended to reduce
squeals and jangles
